Senior Battery Cell Engineer (m/f/d) - (Full Time)
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Cell Technology Scouting & Evaluation:
- Identify and evaluate emerging battery cell technologies (e.g., high-energy-density Li-ion, silicon-dominant anodes, solid-state) to enhance UAV performance in terms of energy density, power density, gravimetric efficiency, and safety.
- Monitor industry trends and research advancements in battery cell development for aerospace applications.
- Conduct feasibility studies and provide technical recommendations on new cell technologies for integration into UAV product generations.
- Cell Supplier Engagement & Prototyping:
- Establish and maintain technical relationships with battery cell manufacturers and research institutions.
- Manage the sourcing of prototype battery cells for in-house and external testing.
- Collaborate with suppliers on technical discussions, data exchange, and product roadmaps.
- Battery Cell Performance Characterization & Testing:
- Design and oversee comprehensive in-house and/or external testing protocols for prototype battery cells, focusing on UAV-specific performance metrics
- Analyze test data, interpret results, and generate reports to characterize cell performance, identify limitations, and benchmark against targets.
- Refine testing methodologies for accurate and reliable cell evaluation within rapid development cycles.
- Simulation & UAV System-Level Performance Analysis:
- Develop and utilize electrochemical, thermal, and electrical simulation models to predict battery cell and UAV system performance under various flight conditions.
- Conduct sensitivity analyses to assess the impact of cell parameters on overall UAV flight endurance and power capability.
- Evaluate cell technologies for specific UAV platforms based on energy, power, gravimetric/volumetric density, and thermal management requirements.
- Cell Limit Definition & UAV Application Optimization:
- Collaborate with battery cell manufacturers to define application-specific operating limits and performance envelopes for cells tailored to UAV mission profiles.
- Ensure cell operating strategies maximize performance, cycle life, and safety under aerial operational stresses.
- Custom Cell Specification & Sourcing:
- Develop detailed technical specifications for customized battery cells to meet unique UAV product requirements.
- Manage the technical aspects of custom cell development projects through to production.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Ability to work from our offices in Munich, Germany.
- Background in Electrochemistry, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience in battery cell R&D, characterization, or system integration, with a focus on Lithium-ion battery technologies. Experience in aerospace, automotive, or high-performance energy storage is preferred.
- Strong understanding of battery electrochemistry, cell components (anode, cathode, electrolyte, separator), and manufacturing processes.
- Practical experience with battery cell testing equipment and data analysis tools.
- Proficiency in battery modeling and simulation software (e.g., COMSOL, GT-SUITE, MATLAB/Simulink, or equivalent), particularly for thermal and electrical performance prediction under dynamic loads.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and make informed decisions.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills for effective collaboration with internal teams, external suppliers, and customers.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with silicon-dominant anodes, solid-state batteries, or other advanced battery chemistries is a plus.
- Knowledge of battery management systems (BMS) and pack-level integration for high-power, lightweight applications.
- Excellent English communication skills both written and verbal.
- German language skills are welcome.
